Social Media…ugh

It will help sell your work they said.

Does anyone else out there get a case of the head spinnies when you try to keep up with all of the different social media platforms out there? Don’t get me wrong, I see how it can be beneficial to use social media to advance your work, but sometimes, I just don’t get it.

The differences between a thread, a post, a tweet, a story…maybe this is meant for people the ages of my children and not for me…maybe I’m just too old to get it?

I’ve been using Threads, Instagram, Facebook, etc., but I never feel confident when I hit that little plus symbol to put something new out there. Does anyone else feel this way? I spend a lot of time saying “wait, how do I?” I ask Google frequent questions related to posting on social media networks that should maybe be more obvious to me than it is.

All of that being said, I’ve met some really great people on these sites. For me, social media is more about connections and engaging with like-minded people than it is getting a huge following count. I don’t follow everyone back, because I don’t see the point in following someone who doesn’t create the kind of content I’m interested in viewing. I feel like that would just be disingenuous.

I want to be around a crowd of people who have similar values, interests and genuinely want to engage for the right reasons. I see a lot of posts where people are complaining about unfollows and the like. It honestly doesn’t bother me if someone I follow doesn’t follow me back. I followed your account because I thought something you did had value, if you don’t feel that way about my offerings, I’d rather you find something else you are interested in.

So, I keep going, one post here and one post there. Hoping I will continue to meet new people who have a love of nature and art, music and books. Even so, WordPress still feels like it’s my home. Thanks, you guys.

  1. I agree. There are so many different platforms out there, each with its own method and process. It is so easy to get overwhelmed.

  2. It’s overwhelming. I don’t use it much any longer. Especially with photography, there are so many images floating around, each screaming for attention. Many years ago I was on the Nat Geo site. No one ever noticed my work. Too many to choose from! I’m waiting for the Replacement for Meta. It hadn’t come yet, but it will.

      1. And each platform has its own vibe and way of doing things. I did Bluesky for a bit, Threads, etc… and you have to switch your brain with each one before posting.

  3. This is a reason why I gave up. Instagram, Facebook, and WordPress are it. My life is boring now too, so I don’t have much to say. The interesting things aren’t legally allowed to be discussed. So, I’m finding myself more in the social media shadows than utilizing it for contact and books.

    1. I wish there was a clearer roadmap on etiquette for these sites. I see a lot of people complaining that they aren’t getting seen and then getting seen for complaining. Nah. None of that 💩.

      1. I feel like most algorithms are geared towards negativity. I see anger and sadness spread faster than happiness.
